Reporting to the Associate Dean, Continuing and Professional Studies, the Student Support Specialist, Academic Upgrading supports Academic Upgrading (“AU”) students to ensure that they successfully work towards completing their program goals. The incumbent is responsible for providing potential students with information about the AU program, as well as determining if the program is suitable for them. During the application process, the incumbent determines whether the student will be placed in the AU program, or is referred to appropriate alternate resources and programs with external partners. The incumbent advises clients and determines the courses needed to meet goals. Important to this role is the ongoing liaising/collaborating with the AU faculty for the purpose of sharing student concerns and ensuring that any issues are resolved. Along with the faculty, the incumbent monitors those students who are experiencing difficulties, at risk, and/or unclear about the next steps regarding any aspect of their Sheridan experience.
The incumbent is also an integral part of a team that develops and implements appropriate outreach strategies that effectively market the Academic Upgrading program and services. As a team member, the incumbent is responsible for providing input into the planning and delivery of program activities.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
The successful candidate will possess at least a 3 year diploma/degree or equivalent in the fields of Business, Marketing, Business Administration, International Relations, Public Administration, Education, Adult Education, or a related field as well as a minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in an educational environment (post-secondary preferred) or a combination of educational and social services environments where responsibilities included assessing and advising clients, preparing and presenting educational topics to groups of students, designing and writing policy and procedural manuals, collecting, recording, analyzing, reporting, and presenting statistics. The successful candidate must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, & Microsoft Access, as well as knowledge of databases. Strong customer service skills are essential for the role, as well as strong problem solving skills. The successful candidate must have proven ability to work within a team.
