    Reporting to the Associate Dean, Continuing and Professional Studies, the Student Support Specialist, Academic Upgrading supports Academic Upgrading (“AU”) students to ensure that they successfully work towards completing their program goals.  The incumbent is responsible for providing potential students with information about the AU program, as well as determining if the program is suitable for them.  During the application process, the incumbent determines whether the student will be placed in the AU program, or is referred to appropriate alternate resources and programs with external partners.  The incumbent advises clients and determines the courses needed to meet goals.  Important to this role is the ongoing liaising/collaborating with the AU faculty for the purpose of sharing student concerns and ensuring that any issues are resolved.  Along with the faculty, the incumbent monitors those students who are experiencing difficulties, at risk, and/or unclear about the next steps regarding any aspect of their Sheridan experience.

    The incumbent is also an integral part of a team that develops and implements appropriate outreach strategies that effectively market the Academic Upgrading program and services.  As a team member, the incumbent is responsible for providing input into the planning and delivery of program activities.

    • Ensuring that students have a learner plan, outlining goals set and goal path;
    • Guiding and advising students on general and/or program specific admission requirements, application processes, Sheridan curriculum, curriculum delivery and postsecondary education, both at Sheridan and in Ontario;
    • Providing initial career advising regarding clarity of program choice, including requirements needed for post-secondary programs;
    • Coaching students through barriers that are preventing them from taking the next steps or from succeeding in the AU program (this is done through one-on-one sessions);
    • Providing explanation of options (relevant to the student’s specific situation) and assisting students to prioritize and develop a course of action that leads to an effective solution. Such tailored action plans often include referrals to other Sheridan specialists (e.g. Counsellors, Academic Advisors, etc.);
    • Meeting with program coordinator/Associate Dean to resolve individual student needs;
    • Developing an event management plan for each event ensuring that tasks are completed on time;
    • Delivering recruitment presentations both on-site and off-site to community agencies, Ontario Works case managers, high school guidance counsellors, LINC classes, Sheridan Faculty and other departments;

    • Guiding the process of material creation through internal Sheridan bodies alongside Program Coordinator and Associate Dean;
    • Informing and ensuring teamwork, collaboration and information sharing to foster excellent customer service;
    • Other duties as assigned.
