    Reporting to the Director of Employment Relations & Partnerships, the Human Resources Business Partner provides a full range of proactive HR consulting /advising service and coaching to a specific client group within the College, in support of Sheridan’s strategic plan. The HR Business Partner is the primary contact to the client group for HR functions and provides proactive, current and strategic and operational advice to managers and staff in the following areas:  recruitment and selection, employee/labour relations, job evaluation and performance management, disability management and benefits, learning and development, and health and safety.  As necessary, the incumbent collaborates with the Director of Employment Relations & Partnerships and other functional managers within Human Resources. 

     

    Specific Responsibilities Include:

     

    • Consulting on a daily basis with managers to encourage positive employee relations;
    • Advising on best practices, employment law and keeping abreast of current trends /changes in legislation;
    • Providing advice to clients based on the interpretation of policies and procedures and employment law (ESA, FOI, OH&S, Terms & Conditions for Administrative staff);
    • Collaborating with Disability Management Consultant in support of the Accommodation/ Return to Work process for employees absent due to illness/injury;
    • Coaching managers on management best practices, employee motivation, performance issues management and employee development; organizational development / restructuring and planning for future HR needs;
    • Advising on progressive discipline process including appropriate communication, documentation and attendance at meetings as a management representative;
    • Advising on termination process including investigation, document preparation; coordinating outplacement services and security as necessary; negotiating final termination package with employee; consulting with legal counsel as appropriate;
    • Providing consultation services to managers in the area of job evaluation and participating as a member of the Support Staff Job Evaluation Committee (SSJEC);
    • Conducting investigations (under the direction of the Manager, Human Rights and Equity), including fact finding interviews, report preparation/communication and findings in reference to Human Rights and Workplace Harassment;
    • Managing recruitment related issues for faculty and senior administrative positions within the client group;
    • Supporting the learning and development initiatives of the HR department.

     

    Qualifications:

     

    • 4 year Bachelor’s degree or 3 year diploma/degree + post graduate diploma in Human Resources, Business or a related program is required along with five years of related experience (or, an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience);
    • Post-graduate certificate in HR Management and CHRP or CHRL designation are preferred;
    • Knowledge and experience in labour contracts and labour relations trends and recruitment and selection is required;
    • Demonstrated expertise in understanding and working with Ontario’s workplace legislation (Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Labour Relations Act) and contractual agreements is required;
    • Conflict resolution, mediation or negotiation skills training preferred;
    • Strong research skills, analytical and problem solving skills are required;
    • Demonstrated skill and knowledge to deal with all aspects of diversity in the workplace;
    • Excellent communication skills (including presentation and negotiation skills);
    • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to build relationships;
    • Good judgement, diplomacy, discretion and sensitivity to confidentiality, privacy and human rights.
