    Reporting to the Manager, Accessible Learning, the incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive accommodation plans and supports for students with disabilities which are intended to facilitate and promote successful transitions and a learning environment that is conducive to academic success and inclusiveness. The incumbent determines appropriate individualized accommodations for students based on the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s policies and guidelines for accommodating persons with disabilities. Through the utilization of a case management service delivery model, the incumbent ensures students receive appropriate accommodations by determining their eligibility for services and providing accommodation through the co-ordinating, facilitating and delivering of a range of services and supports.

     

    Specific Responsibilities Include:

     

    • Conducting intake appointments and verifying documentation (medical, psychological, neurological, psychoeducational) to determine student eligibility for accommodations and support services;
    • Identifying appropriate accommodation plans to address students’ functional limitations while upholding bona fide academic essential requirements;
    • Working with students to explore options/discuss solutions while promoting self-empowerment and self-advocacy;
    • Liaising and negotiating on students’ behalf regarding academic accommodations and accessibility issues;
    • Liaising with faculty to determine essential academic requirements that may require non-standard accommodations;
    • Coordinating and facilitating transition or information sessions and workshops for students/parents, guardians/case workers etc. on identifying and accessing services within the college community;
    • Consulting with faculty/staff and acting as a resource to the campus community;
    • Providing leadership to Peer Mentors; supporting their recruiting and training; evaluating their skill development;
    • Researching, developing and coordinating appropriate programs/services to accommodate students with disabilities;
    • Providing information to external agencies on AL and its policies and procedures as requested and assigned;
    • Facilitating the acquisition of and coordinating Sign Language Interpreters and Computerized Note Takers;
    • Performing other related duties as required.
     

    Qualifications:

     

    The successful candidate must possess a 4 year Occupational Therapist degree, or a degree in a related field, along with a minimum of 3 years of experience working in a setting providing intake and direct services to individuals with disabilities, preferably in an educational environment (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience). Applied knowledge of providing accommodations based on recommendations in medical, psychoeducational, neuropsychological, and other assessments is preferred. The successful candidate should also be knowledgeable about a variety of legislation governing disability supports at the post-secondary level (Human Rights Commission’s policies and guidelines, AODA, FIPPA, etc.) and should be knowledgeable about appropriate post-secondary accommodations, assistive technology and college programs and services. Must have the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, work with diverse populations, respond to needs in a sensitive and positive manner, and utilize excellent judgment, analytical and problem solving skills. They should have a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team in a client centred environment, and possess a commitment to the principles of empowerment, integration and inclusion. Excellent communication, facilitation, presentation and outreach skills are required. Candidates must be registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario.
