Salary Range: $62,717 - $108,723 (based on relevant educational qualifications and experience)
Reporting to the Manager, Career Services and Student Leadership and Engagement, the Career Counsellor supports Sheridan’s diverse student population, providing career counselling services to help students explore, identify, and evaluate career goals, and make plans to achieve them throughout the student lifecycle. The Career Counsellor is an integral contributor to support career clarity, academic success, personal wellness, and designs programs, strategies, and innovative solutions linked to institutional priorities such as student retention, persistence, and career education. This role will also support the development of programs supporting graduates to careers in partnership with Academic Faculties or community partners, and to support first year students in student success and achievement.
• Supporting students through multiple methods balanced between individual appointments, campus programming, and larger group settings
• Consulting with students on exploring career options, generating possibilities, and career development strategies
• Conducting needs assessments, understanding psycho-social factors of students, and taking a holistic view of student(s) to develop personalized career plan
• Partnering with academic Faculties on projects related to Career Education, weaving employability and career education into curriculum and programming, in addition to employability skills development both in and outside of the classroom
• Guidance and counselling on effective career decision-making and the management of career and personal circumstances that affect career choices
• Sourcing and providing current Canadian occupational and career/labour market information
• Educational planning, including both students changing their current path and those furthering their education and pathways at Sheridan
• Occasionally participating in case conferences concerning their students with other Sheridan staff, helping professionals and/or parents
• Collecting client notes and data; creating and updating client materials
• Organizing, publicizing and executing small and large events including orientation and transition programs, educational sessions and other career related activities
• Vocational testing, including the selection, administration and interpretation of many different types of level A & B standardized assessments of career interests, abilities, personality and values such as MBTI, EQi, Personality Dimensions, and Work Motivation Scale
• Liaising, offering professional consultation, and participation on Sheridan committees on the topics above to Sheridan managers, faculty and staff (e.g. student retention, career clarity, persistence, career education, etc)
• Other duties as assigned
The successful incumbent will have a Master’s Degree in a related field and at least 3 years of relevant work experience in an educational or community based setting with a focus on career/vocational exploration. The incumbent will have excellent group presentation skills and be qualified to administer and assess student’s career readiness and goals. A solid grounding in career counselling theory is also essential. It is expected that the incumbent will bring detailed knowledge of career information, overall labour market, trends and projections, and post-secondary education options in Ontario, Canada and abroad. A commitment to remain current on these topics is essential for long-term success in this role. The incumbent must be comfortable working in a variety of settings including individual one on one appointments and groups settings.
