    Reporting to the Production Manager, the Technical Director works as an integral member in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design. The incumbent provides technical expertise to the students of Technical Production for Performing Arts Industry program, through assistance and demonstration, in the practical application of course theory as it relates to the safe operation of theatrical lighting and staging equipment and methods. The Incumbent exercises responsibility for the development, co-ordination, execution and safe operation of various technical theatre equipment and systems, including lighting, staging, rigging and special effects, for Theatre Sheridan activities.


    Specific Responsibilities Include:


    • Overseeing and co-ordinating student lab and class activities, within the Technical Production for the Performing Arts program
    • Overseeing, co-ordinating, and/or executing the safe operation of various technical theatre equipment and systems for all events (primarily Theatre Sheridan activities), using the Theatre facilities
    • Establishing lines of communications with production designers and directors to determine appropriate creative elements for Theatre Sheridan events
    • Obtaining materials and supplies and overseeing the purchasing process used by all departments of the Theatre Technical Production Department
    • Tracking and administering budgets for lighting, staging, rigging and stage management materials and supplies
    • Maintaining, evaluating, and upgrading Theatre Sheridan’s facilities and equipment in consultation with other Theatre Sheridan staff; Establishing, overseeing, and executing an ongoing maintenance plan of all lighting and staging equipment to ensure proper working order and to meet safety standards
    • Making recommendations and assisting in equipment purchases
    • Working to establish a yearly calendar of dates and deadlines and producing event-specific schedules of production and technical activities
    • Co-ordinating the exchange/rental of equipment between other theatre groups and companies for mutual benefit
    • Performing other related duties as assigned




    The successful candidate will have a 3-year diploma/degree in Theatre Technical Production and Management or related field, along with 5 years of related experience as Theatrical Technical Director and/or Theatrical Production Manager with specialization in Lighting, Rigging and Staging (or an equivalent combination or relevant education and experience).  The successful candidate will also have Fall Arrest Certification, Theatrical Rigging training, and AutoCAD – Level 2 or equivalent. The successful candidate will be capable of lifting up to 44 pounds. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential.  Experience in an educational environment would be considered an asset.
