    Reporting to the Associate Dean, Faculty of Continuing and Professional Studies, the Student Support Specialist (SSS) will support Academic Upgrading (AU) students to ensure that they successfully work towards completing their program goals.  During the application process, the SSS will determine whether students are placed in the Academic Upgrading program, or referred to appropriate alternate resources and programs with external partners.  Along with the faculty, the SSS will monitor students who are experiencing difficulties, are at risk, and/or unclear about the next steps regarding any aspect of their Sheridan experience. The SSS is also an integral part of a team that develops and implements appropriate outreach strategies that effectively market Academic Upgrading’s programs and services. 


    Specific Responsibilities Include:


    • Ensuring that students have a learner plan outlining set goals
    • Guiding and advising students on general and/or program specific admission requirements, application process, for programs at Sheridan and other post-secondary institutions
    • Coaching students through barriers that are preventing them from taking the next steps or from succeeding in the AU program
    • Providing explanation of options (relevant to the student’s specific situation) and assists students to prioritize and develop a course of action that leads to an effective solution
    • Initiating and participating in the progress review process, three times per term (Fall/Winter/Summer)
    • Coordinating meetings with AU faculty/program coordinator to resolve individual student needs
    • Meeting with WSIB and Second Career staff to provide client updates
    • Providing initial information regarding program length and logistics; preparing correspondences and progress reports for WSIB, OW, Home Suite Hope, Second Career, etc. staff
    • Assisting clients with the completion of forms; responding to queries; validating accuracy of client information for the database, including milestones
    • Contacting students regarding assessment results and program admittance/referral
    • Notifying staff of new students by providing assessment and start date information
    • Representing AU and Sheridan in Peel/Halton regions to potential clients, community partners and local businesses
    • Completing other duties as assigned




    • 3 year diploma/degree in social work, business administration, public administration, education, adult education, or a related field
    • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in an educational environment (post-secondary preferred) or a combination of education and social services environments where responsibilities include: assessing and advising clients, preparing and presenting educational topics to groups of students, collecting, recording, analyzing, reporting and presenting statistics
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Demonstrated interpersonal and team work skills
    • Strong organizational, planning and time management skills
    • Well versed in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as database applications
    • Ability to resolve day-to-day conflicts effectively and expediently, take initiative and be self-directed while also being creative and analytical in solving complex problems
    • Has a genuine interest in meeting the needs of students and a high degree of empathy are essential personal characteristics of a successful candidate
