Reporting to the Manager, Technical Services, the Technologist provides advice and expertise on hardware and software solutions on an on-going basis to faculty members, students and staff within the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design (FAAD), Sheridan and joint intercollegiate programs. As a member of a team of Macintosh specialists, the Technologist makes recommendations to enhance the learning environment, meets user needs and implements new policies and procedures where necessary. The incumbent researches complex workflows and ensures that the software and hardware works together, works on special projects and implements new technology in the classroom. The Technologist is essential to the delivery of curriculum in FAAD, and demonstrates expertise in digital media technologies. 

 

Specific Responsibilities Include:

 

  • Developing and implementing strategies for solving complex technical problems related to the delivery of curriculum in a Macintosh/Windows environment;
  • Liaising with faculty and Information Technology (I.T.) staff in other universities and colleges by joint programs;
  • Formalizing procedures, writing documentation and providing guidance to students, Faculty and staff;
  • Acting as a technical resource for the entire College;
  • Running and maintaining equipment in the Digital Fabrication Lab including advanced maintenance and making repair/replace decisions for 3D printers, laser-cutters and other Maker gear;
  • Initiating, coordinating and conducting all inspection and maintenance procedures and processes for hardware, peripherals and software;
  • Responsible for all diagnostics and repairs, based on inspection and maintenance procedures;
  • Coordinating College participation in internal and external presentations and shows;
  • Analyzing new software and modifying software to improve efficiency and compatibility with existing resources;
  • Initiating the buying and selling of supplies to students and keeps appropriate records of all transactions;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned (such as researching hardware, software and new technology and helping faculty with the implementation into curriculum).

 

Qualifications:

 

The successful candidate will possess a 2-year diploma in arts, arts education and/or computing technology (Computer Science Technology, Fine Arts, Art History, Photography, Animation and Multi Media) or a related field of study, along with a minimum of 8 years of technical experience in the field of computing and art, including 3 years of progressive experience working directly with fine art and multimedia practices (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience).  A minimum of 2-3 years of training or consulting experience in a technological capacity, including administration and maintenance of current generation, is also required.  The incumbent must have proficiency in client management of desktops, mobiles and digital image systems (primarily Macintosh based).  The successful incumbent will possess the appropriate Apple Technical Certification course or Apple Service Certification course (40 hours minimum).  The successful incumbent must have experience managing 30 or more workstations at a given time.   Experience using and maintaining 3D printers is preferred.  The incumbent must possess at least one area of technical expertise/specialization in a specific area/discipline based on departmental or program needs.  Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential as well as strong communication, problem-solving skills and the ability to keep things on track by prioritizing workload and managing expectations.
